Practice makes perfect: have fun learning to pipette

Learning to pipette accurately is a foundational skill in the biology lab. These FREE activities and hands-on lab kits help students as young as elementary school begin their pipetting journey.

FREE pipetting activities

Pipetting a Flower

Use a micropipette to reveal a secret code that determines  stem length, leaf color, and number of petals on a flower. Students will practice how to correctly use an adjustable volume micropipette, discover how codes can provide instructions for traits in living organisms, and use their results to build and design a flower.

Micropipetting and Density Experiment

Students learn to use micropipettes to accurately measure small volumes of food dye. You will then compare your expected measurements to observed measurements using a digital balance. Pay attention to technique and cleanliness to ensure your data is as accurate as possible!

Pipette Art FREE Activity

Students learn to dispense various volumes of liquids using a micropipette while tapping into their creative sides with this FREE downloadable activity.

Measuring UP!

Students will use a 2-20 µL micropipette to learn how to pipette and then compare drops of different sizes to see the difference in scale.

Micropipette Mystery

In this activity, students will each use a 2–20 µL micropipette to reveal a mystery image!

Micropipetting with Food Dye

In this lab exploration, students dive into the world of micropipetting, using food dye to visually represent volumes and practice calculating percentages and ratios – a perfect blend of math and science! Get ready to create some colorful mixtures and sharpen your laboratory techniques.

Speaking Volumes

Student pairs practice using a micropipette to draw up and deposit two different color dyes to a common tube, then again from the combined tube. If the tube is empty and there is no air gap in the tip, they have correctly used their pipettes.

How Much Liquid Do I Have?

In this activity, students will each use a 20–200 μL micropipette and determine how much liquid is in the tip!

Pipette Anatomy

In this activity, students will identify the parts of the pipette and their functions.

Which Device?

Students will determine which measuring tool is appropriate for making solutions.

Ready to take the next steps in your pipetting journey with your students? Check out these hands-on labs that help your students truly master pipetting – an essential skill in the research lab.

Pipette Pointillism Jr.

Science and art go hand in hand with this hands-on STEAM activity that develops pipetting skills while also engaging the student’s artistic side. Available for for younger students (M3017JR) and more advanced students (M3017).

Gel Loading Practice MiniLab

Students can master loading, handling, and dispensing liquids with micropipettes – essential skills in any biotech lab – with the Gel Loading Practice Kit. Required for first-time micropipette users and strongly recommended for anyone who needs practice pipetting.

The Pipetting Practice and Dilution Solution Introductory Kit

The equipment and lab materials included in this kit allow students to learn how to use a variable volume pipette and load a gel, as well as calculate different concentrations and understand the differences between a direct and serial dilution.
