Using electrophoresis to decipher genetic information can take a little bit of practice. The Genetics Starter Single User Reagent Set starts with a lesson in basic pipetting and loading an agar disc, then moves into inheritance with labs that illustrate paternity and Mendelian genetics at work.
First, students develop pipetting skills with a 2-part, hands-on activity: dialing a pipette to a volume that corresponds to the amount identified on the pipette practice card, and then practicing loading into a soft agar disk with wells to simulate loading into an agarose gel.
The next step is doing electrophoresis with DNA samples and performing an analysis of the resulting DNA patterns. What better way to do this helping conservation scientists identify which male whale is likely little Luna’s dad?
Students then study how an individual gene for bitter taste can be inherited by helping Jillian determine just how she became the ONLY non-taster in her family of bitter tasters. Start with analyzing possible Punnett Squares to complete her family pedigree and then see what the genotypes look like by electrophoresis.
The single user reagent sets are pre-aliquoted for an individual workstation making it easy for you to open the pack and start your electrophoresis with even less prep, and include one bag of 2 – 200 µL micropipette tips. These activities require a MiniOne Electrophoresis System with p20 pipette (not included).
